ATLANTA, GA – Spectators were left stunned Saturday night at the sight of an alleged Freudian slip at the Bands of America Atlanta Super Regional. Witnesses say the performance by New Township High School from Durham, North Carolina featured an oversized member of the male anatomy, a sight from which they say they will never fully recover.
Sources close to the band program say the show, titled One Small Step for Mankind, is an homage to astronaut Neil Armstrong and the NASA Space Program. The crowd, however, sat in silent horror during the band’s final drill move featuring what show designer David Jenkins describes as a spaceship landing on the moon.
Mortified audience members claim the 87 foot long phallus appeared seemingly out of nowhere during the final musical push of Elton John’s Rocket Man.
“I shouldn’t have to worry about what my children are going to see at a marching band contest,” said a visibly shaken band parent. “Now I have to explain to my son why the left “engine” was slightly bigger the right one.”
A few spectators say they grew suspicious of the show’s thematic content during the band’s ballad of Space Oddity by David Bowie.
“Why, in God’s name, was the sax soloist wearing ass-less chaps?”, asked puzzled Music Effect Judge Stan Osmund. “It just doesn’t make any sense.”
